75 miles of very rough off road driving gets to this other worldly area of Iceland. Volcanic explosions and lava flows have formed a very primeval landscape said to have inspired Tolkien's land of Mordor. The rocks are largely Rhyolites (I'm no geologist mind) and give the mountains their characteristic colors. Light was breaking through clouds and spotlighting small areas of this vast landscape giving brightly lit areas contrasting against deep shadows.
